Title: Technical Director

Location: The Dekker Centre for the Performing Arts, North Battleford, SK

Job Description

 

The Technical Director is the primary technical operator for all event spaces within the Dekker Centre. The Technical Director reports directly to the General Manager and works in conjunction with the Patron Experience Manager. As a senior member of the team, the Technical Director is responsible for coordinating all technical aspects of the organization, as well as managing all aspects of the back of house, including maintenance of the facility. Due to the nature of the performing arts, and our organizational size, the Technical Director may have to take on other roles and responsibilities to support their team as necessary.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Coordinate all production requirements for the execution of all events
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation for all events
  • Schedule meetings, provide estimates to clients and source resources
  • Schedule all other technicians (casual and contracted) for any event in the facility and ensure all events are staffed appropriately
  • Set technical procedures and standards for operation of the facility.
  • Run all major setups and strikes for large scale events
  • Have flexibility to work evenings and weekends, as well as administrative hours Monday through Friday.
  • Physical work is required and includes being able to lift equipment, climb ladders and manage working at a variety of heights
  • Create budgets for back of house resources and follow all show/event budgets, as well as fiscal budgets
  • Plan, cost, budget & draft small event or facility construction projects as required.
  • Plan and coordinate annual maintenance of the facility, in consultation and conjunction with the City of North Battleford.
  • Maintain accurate and up to date venue technical specifications and equipment lists.
  • Maintain a capital replacement program for the technical aspects of the venue and work with the City of North Battleford facilities and maintenance staff to plan continual replacement of all back of house equipment.
  • Stay informed and up to date with advancements in production technology, equipment and safety related to the venue’s operation.

 

Qualifications

  • Formal training from an accredited institution or a combination of equivalent experience and training in technical disciplines
  • Minimum 3 years professional experience, however we are welling to offer the position to someone who has recently graduated if they show a willingness to lead and learn

 

Required Skills:

  • Experience working with crews of all sizes in a variety of roles
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Knowledgeable in stage craft and scenic construction.
  • Ability to plan and execute technical riders, stage and lighting plots, ground plans and input lists
  • Ability to read and produce technical drawings. Moderate experience in computer aided drafting, knowledgeable with AutoCAD an asset.
  • Moderate knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Experience operating all technical disciplines including lighting, video, audio, stagging and rigging
  • Fall arrest, aerial lift training, pyrotechnics certification, computer/networking background are assets
  • Working knowledge of current safety standards and the implementation of those standards.
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to work on multiple projects with tight timelines.
  • An ability to work independently while also being a part of a small and dynamic team.
  • Ability to collaborate and work with a variety of artists, and facility renters, both professional and community based.
  • Ability to be flexible, navigate difficult situations and problem solve safely and effectively
  • Hold a Class 5 drivers’ license.

 

Terms of Employment

  • Full time permanent, salaried position, starting at $70,000 per year
  • 4 weeks paid vacation

  • The Gordon Tootoosis Memorial Theatre
    • A state-of-the-art proscenium arch theatre with 384 seats.
    • The Evelyn Ulmer Atrium
      • A 3000 square foot lobby with south facing floor to ceiling windows
      • The Dr. James Lawrence Hall
        • A 3000 square foot multipurpose hall with a sprung floor and audio/visual infrastructure

The Dekker Centre presents a professional presenting series each year and is a roadhouse for touring productions, concerts and local rentals; approximately 75- 100 events per year.
